Actor-empresario británico. En 1878 debutó en la escena londinense y se hizo conocido como un actor romántico con talento para la comedia y los papeles de carácter. Fue reconocido por su actuación en
The Private Secretary (1884). Posteriormente, asumió como director del teatro Haymarket (1887–97), donde dirigió y actuó en fastuosas producciones shakesperianas; como actor empresario del teatro Her Majesty's (1897–1915) continuó con el mismo estilo. Produjo notables versiones teatrales de las obras de
Charles Dickens, y en 1904 fundó la Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
